Çavuşoğlu: Arrangements for activating the meetings of the Strategic Cooperation Committee as a prelude for the Qatari – Turkish summit

HE Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu praised the level of relations between Doha and Ankara and its development at all levels. Turkish Foreign Minister, during a reception at the residence of the Turkish ambassador in Doha Ahmet Demirok, confirmed that the talks with Qatari officials discussed strengthening the work of the high-level strategic cooperation committee, which was approved during the visit of His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to Ankara last December.

The minister Çavuşoğlu added “we are willing to arrange the first meeting of the committee this year and today we have agreed to establish a joint committee that will starts soon in a meeting next March. Then there will be a meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries in April to enhance the cooperation and to prepare for the summit at the leaders level between the two countries.

Turkish Foreign Minister said that Doha and Ankara signed military and security agreements, stressing on the necessity to deepen cooperation between the two countries in these fields.

He added that many Turkish companies have a great interest in investing in Qatar and we have to work to increase the volume of bilateral trade. There are a lot of Turkish active companies that have many projects in Qatar. I wish them the continuity especially that Qatar will host the championship World Cup 2022 in addition to its vision for 2030; certainly the Turkish companies will participate in all these projects.

The Minister pointed to the cooperation between the two countries in the agricultural sector. He said that 2015 is a cultural year between Qatar and Turkey so we have to work in order to make it a successful year. We had talks with the Qatari side regarding this matter as well as we would like to open a Turkish cultural center in Qatar and we hope that Qatar will open a cultural center in our country.

About the political issues, Minister Çavuşoğlu said that we discussed a lot of regional issues in Syria, Iran and Yemen, adding that the situation in Yemen is very fragile. We also reviewed the topics that will be discussed at London meeting next Thursday to confront terrorism. Besides we reviewed the cooperation with the Gulf Cooperation Council congratulating Qatar for heading the current GCC session. We hope to hold the fifth meeting of the cooperation between us and the GCC States during the presidency of Qatar for the Council in Doha.

About the possibility of starting Qatari- Turkish mediation to solve the situation in Yemen and Libya, HE Turkish Foreign Minister said “we have common positions and perspectives, as we demanded an immediate cease-fire in Libya as well as we are trying to collect all the parties in an effective dialogue and calling to form a national unity government. We have to respect the UN resolution and we support UN efforts in rejecting any foreign interference particularly military intervention.

About the explosive situation in Yemen, Turkish Foreign Minister said that the GCC countries will meet today and we have the same position because Yemen is in serious need to security and stability, therefore if there is any role for all of us to stop this, we will try our best to achieve it.

About the anti-terrorism efforts and practices of the organization of the Islamic State "Daaesh", he said “we have to fight terrorism because Daaesh threatens the territory of Syria and Iraq. It forms a global threat particularly for Turkey, so we have to fight terrorism in all its forms including Daaesh; but we need many solutions with Daaesh. The current regime in Syria is the reason behind all this extremism and terrorism in Syria, therefore, both Qatar and Turkey support a comprehensive strategy to bring stability and security to the region."
